"Meet the Bees" with Paul & Jean Lythgoe
Sunday 19th August 2012
The day started with blue skies but as we approached No. 5 to get ready for
our event, the clouds gathered! We didn't want it to rain as much of the
excitement for all who attended the event was to do with visiting the hives
and seeing the bees.
The turn out was small but small on this occasion was good as we were able
to talk to individuals and gave them the opportunity to ask questions.
We commenced with a cup of tea/coffee and when Bryan had welcomed all to
the event, Paul commenced his talk on the different types of bees and products
of the hive, using beautifully illustrated posters. Susan then talked about
the hive itself and a small model national hive was used to demonstrate.
By this time there was a light drizzle so, after some questions and a break
for refreshments, most of us got suited up to go down to the hive.
We were able to see a small colony in a nucleus hive and took some photographs
of the group in the apiary before returning to the house under heavy rain!
It was a day enjoyed by all and great interest was shown by a few with a
view to having a hive of their own.
